Lavoir de Chassignelles

This is a lavoir that was fed via a pipe from the Canal de Bourgogne and also via rainwater collected directly from the roofs positioned above the basin.  According to canal documentation the used water had to be returned to the canal via a further pipe.  This lavoir was built in 1837 and was used until 1965.  The basin measures 7.6m x 2.0m.  It was built from stones sourced from the local quarries at Cry-sur-Armançon and Pacy-sur-Armançon.  It is located slightly below lock 79 versant Yonne in order that water could be gravity fed down the pipe into the basin and afterwards back into the canal.

Chassignelles is in department 89 - Yonne and we visited this lavoir on 5th June 2019.
