On 24 September 2023 we found three lavoirs in the small village of Vandières.
Rue de la Tuilerie
This lavoir was now being used as a flower bed. The lavoir was constructed in 1862.
Rue Gamache
This was a rare lavoir as it
had a round basin, one of very few we have seen. It also had a chain hanging over the water
attached to a lever on the rafter above.
The water flow into the basin was controlled by a sluice but as there
was no channel for water to leave, we suspect the lever was pulled to lift the
plug to drain the water when it needed changing. Cleverly the house next door was called Lavandières. The lavoir was built in 1855.
Rue Principale
This lavoir was built in 1833 but is not currently in water.
