Lavoirs de Trélou-sur-Marne

Amazingly we found five lavoirs in this small village in the Portes du Champagne.  Karen jokingly pointed out that the villagers must have had the cleanest clothes in France!  Trélou-sur-Marne is in department 02 - Aisne and we visited these lavoirs on 22nd August 2019.

Rue Kennedy (49°04'40.1"N 3°36'24.1"E)

An impluvium and spring fed wash house.  This one is one of the 45 that depict one of Jean de la Fontaine's fables.  In this case it is the story of the heron and the fable
is shown in full on a placard inside.  The story of the lavoirs and fables is described on a placard outside.

Unfortunately, it is not open to the public but it did have a garde genoux with a wash paddle and a pair of clogs.  Strangely the drying rails overhang the wash pool.

Le Chayot (49°04'40.9"N 3°36'10.6"E)

A small wash house where clothes were washed directly in the stream.

La Rue Dufour (49°04'37.0"N 3°36'19.3"E)

An impluvium fed wash house.  Like others in this village the drying rails are over the washing pool.

Rue Victor Hugo (49°04'30.9"N 3°36'31.4"E)

An impluvium and stream fed wash house that is not open to the public.  There is a garde genoux in the far corner and the drying rails are around the walls.

Rue de la Fontaine (49°04'45.7"N 3°36'07.0"E)

An impluvium and spring fed wash house that is open to the public.  It has drying rails on one side.
